B/EV 53
Upsala 30
The Tigers opened up their Section 5A West tournament play with a game against a common foe, the Upsala Cardinals. The Tigers and Cardinals are both in the Prairie Conference and have played twice already this season. Browerville/Eagle Valley came out on the winning end of both regular season games.
The Tigers’ defense carried the team in both halves of this one. They gave up just 15 first-half points. Unfortunately, the offense was unable to take advantage of the solid defensive performance, putting 24 points on the board. The Cardinals committed eight turnovers to just one for the Tigers in the first half.
Hans Puck had the early hot hand for the Tigers as he scored 9 points to lead the Tigers first-half scoring. Parker Duncan scored 6 points.
In the second half, the Tigers again forced nine more turnovers for the Cardinals. B/EV’s defense continued to wear down the Cardinals. The Tigers went ahead 17 points which was too much for the Cardinals to overcome. With one more little run, B/EV’s lead grew to 25 points. The Cardinals scored the final basket of the game, and the final score was 53-30.
Miguel Maloney put up 11 second half points and 14 overall to lead all scorers. Also in double digits was Puck with 13 points and Duncan with 12 points.
Next up for the Tigers is Pine River-Backus. This game was pushed back to Monday, March 12, due to the weather. PR-B defeated B/EV earlier in the season by a score of 60-59.
